Mielle's Honey and Ginger gel and Avocado Hair Milk

Today, we’re going to talk about Mielle Organics Honey and Ginger Gel and Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk!

I’ve tried these products out over the summer and I’m happy to say they’ve both earned a place in my product rotation.

This post is going to highlight the pros, cons, and bottom line impressions of both of these products.

Keep in mind, I can only speak from my experience with my 3a/3b hair. My hope is that this review will be a good guide for all the curly girls out there, but your results may be very different from mine.

Side note: These products were provided at no cost by Mielle Organics, however, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Additionally, this page does contain affiliate links, which means if you purchase something using the product links on this page, I may get a small commission. This comes at no extra cost to you and helps keep this site running. Thank you!

Also, I follow the simplified version of the Curly Girl Method most directly derived from the Curly Girl Handbook. This means the only ingredients I look to avoid are sulfates, silicones, and drying alcohols. If you have more ingredients that you look to avoid, it would be a good idea to check the ingredients for yourself before making a purchase.

Honey and Ginger Gel

Pros

Scent

I absolutely love this honey ginger scent! It’s just the right balance of sweet and spice. It’s light, but noticeable without being overpowering. It didn’t fade quite as much as the scent of other gels usually does, but I didn’t have a problem with this.

Hold

This gel did a really good job holding my curl clumps together and keeping frizz at bay (at least for the first couple of days, but more on this later.).

Definition

This gel gave me some looser definition than I normally get, and if you’ve been following this blog for a while, you know that’s a big plus for me. This is probably my favorite thing about this gel (though the scent is a close second!)

Price

This gel is typically priced at around $12-$13 for 13 oz, so to me, this is an effective and affordable product.

Cons

Longevity

I didn’t find this gel refreshed as well for me as some of my others. This may have just been my hair, but I found that this gel did well on day two, but day three was often hit or miss, and day four was usually a lost cause for me. Frizz was usually the biggest issue with the refresh.

Bottom Line

This is a gel I’ll definitely be adding to my rotation! I’ll reach for it most when I want my curls to be more loosely defined, and likely when I know I’ll be washing more regularly for one reason or another.

Even with the longevity issues, I’d still repurchase this gel for the scent, definition, and hold alone.

Avocado Moisturizing Hair Milk

Pros

Scent

This product is another winner. Though I find this to be a lot subtler than the gel, but it’s light and refreshing and fades once it’s dry.

Moisture

I’m going to be honest. I’ve never been a fan of hair milks in the past, so I can’t accurately compare this to another hair milk. Instead, I’m going to compare it to leave-in conditioners, which I have more experience with.

I found this product definitely lived up to its name. It moisturized really well and took the place of my leave-in conditioner with no problem.

It also refreshed my hair really well on days where it was particularly dry, which no leave-in conditioner has done for me in the past.

Price

Like the gel, it falls into the same $12-$13 price range as the gel, so it fits my specifications of an affordable product.

Cons

Can be a little heavy

Because this product had so much moisture, I found it weighed down my hair just a little more than I liked. It wasn’t bad when I only used it on my wash day, but when I tried to refresh with this product, it built up quickly for me.

However, like I noted above, it did a pretty great job refreshing my hair when it was dryer, so to me, it’s worth holding on to for that alone.

Bottom Line

I liked this product a lot especially to refresh my hair on dryer days. I don’t think I liked it more than my leave in conditioners, but I liked it just as much. And as someone who has never liked hair milks, that’s saying a lot. I also really like how this product worked when I paired it with the gel, and it’s definitely my preferred way to use this product.
