Maui moisture shampoo and conditoner

Today, we’re looking at Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration + Hibiscus Water shampoo and conditioner.

This product was also a reader request from Valeria!

The original request was for the whole line, which had included a leave-in conditioner. I had a hard time tracking that down, and it doesn’t seem to be on Maui Moisture’s website anymore, so I went ahead without it.

If you’d like to see a product reviewed, feel free to leave it in the comments. I can’t promise when a product will make an appearance, but know I’m doing my best to get to it if I can, as soon as I can.

This review will look at what I found to be the pros, the cons, and my bottom line impression of Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration + Hibiscus Water shampoo and conditioner.

Keep in mind, I can only speak from my experience with my 3a/3b hair. My hope is that this review will be a good guide for all the curly girls out there, but your results may be very different from mine.

Side note: This page does contain affiliate links, which means if you purchase something using the product links on this page, I may get a small commission. This comes at no extra cost to you and helps keep this site running. Thank you!

Also, I follow the simplified version of the Curly Girl Method most directly derived from the Curly Girl Handbook. This means the only ingredients I look to avoid are sulfates, silicones, and drying alcohols. If you have more ingredients that you look to avoid, it would be a good idea to check the ingredients for yourself before making a purchase.

Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration + Hibiscus Water Shampoo

Pros

Smell

You can definitely smell the hibiscus in this shampoo, but the bottle also says there’s some watermelon. I found the watermelon to be cutting through more so than anything, which I really enjoyed.

I think it’s a great summer shampoo!

Consistency

It’s a little thicker than most shampoos I’ve tried. But the plus side is that it didn’t spread too fast or run out of my hands before I could get it on my scalp.

Washes well

I thought this product did a fine job of cleaning my hair and scalp. It removed old product and behaved exactly as a shampoo should.

Price

I paid about $7 for this bottle, making it an affordable and effective product!

Cons

Not great for dry scalp

I typically use a scalp friendly shampoo and for good reason. My scalp was dry and flaky after I used this shampoo.

I don’t think this would be the case for the average person who isn’t prone to scalp issues, but if you are, this may not be the shampoo for you.

Bottomline

I like this shampoo fine! I don’t think there’s anything particularly standout about it, but I’d be inclined to keep using it if I didn’t have a dry scalp issue.

If you’d like to give this shampoo a shot, you can find it here.

Maui Moisture Lightweight Hydration + Hibiscus Water Conditioner

Pros

Consistency and slip

This conditioner has a great consistency. It detangled my hair easily and I had no issues working my fingers though my hair.

As advertised

This conditioner was super lightweight. We’ll get to this a little bit in the cons, but I think it was a little too lightweight for me.

But I’m listing it as a pro, because it was kind of what I was expecting, which I love. I always appreciate when a product does what it says it will do and I think this would be a good moisture level for wavy hair or hair that doesn’t need too much moisture.

Price

Like the shampoo, I also paid about $7 for this product, which keeps it in the affordable range.

Cons

The scent

Surprisingly, I didn’t like the scent of this conditioner. Unlike the shampoo, I felt like the hibiscus came through so much stronger on the conditioner compared to the shampoo.

I don’t know if I got an inconsistent bottle of either the shampoo or conditioner or maybe my nose is off. It’s also possible that the amount of conditioner I needed pushed the scent over the edge.

I don’t know.

Regardless, I found this scent to be a little overpowering, and as someone who’s sensitive to florals, I didn’t love it.

But if floral scents are a favorite of yours, this might be good for you.

Packaging

Maui Moisture is known for the square packaging. I didn’t find this to be an issue with the shampoo since it was a thinner consistency. But I struggled with the thicker conditioner.

I found it incredibly difficult to grip the square bottle with enough force to get enough conditioner out.

This is going to be true for all Maui Moisture conditioners, as the square packaging seems to be a part of their brand. Honestly, I found it so difficult that it kind of discourages me from buying a conditioner of theirs in the future.

Moisture (for my hair)

In the end, it this was a little too lightweight for my hair. It simply wasn’t hydrating enough and my hair frizzed soon after it dried.

Bottomline

This conditioner may be great for wavies or anyone who needs less moisture, but it wasn’t a good fit for me.

But if you think it might be a good fit for you and you want to give it a try, you can find it here.
