Summer is right around the corner, and if you’ve been thinking of starting the Curly Girl Method, this may be a very advantageous time to dive in.
In truth, there’s no bad time to start the Curly Girl Method, but starting it in the summer has many pros.
I started the Curly Girl Method in the spring, and it worked well for me. But it was in the summer that I was really able to refine my technique and find my best curls.
If you are considering starting the Curly Girl Method in the summer, I would say the earlier in the summer you start, the more true the following advantages will be for you.
But I think you’ll be able to get most if not all of these advantages if you start at any point in the summer months.
Without further ado, here are the top six reasons you might want to consider starting the Curly Girl Method this summer.

Transition
The transition period tends to be most people’s least favorite part of the Curly Girl Method. So much so that it may even stop many from starting.
I’m totally speaking from experience here–it was months between the time I discovered the Curly Girl Method to the time I actually started simply because of what I’d read about the transition phase.
If you haven’t heard much about the transition, it’s basically the time at the beginning of the Curly Girl Method when your hair and scalp adjust to your new regimen.
During this time, your hair will typically look worse before it looks better. You can read more about the transition period here.
My transition wasn’t that bad, but it can vary from person to person.
Since pulling your hair up or tucking it under a hat is common place in the summer, it can provide you some really good cover if you do, in fact, end up with a rougher transition.
Frizz win/win
In a lot of places, summers equal months of heat and humidity. For most curly-haired people I know, this often means lots of frizz.
Ultimately, the Curly Girl Method can give you relatively frizz-free curls even in the summer! How immediately you see a change will likely depend on the state of your hair.
If you weren’t someone who bleached or used heat on your hair too much, you may find that once your hair adjusts to coming off silicones and sulfates, it’s in pretty good shape.
Since it isn’t too damaged, your hair may take well to the conditioner and hydration you’re giving it, which could very well result in frizz-free curls pretty quickly.
It will change how you think about your hair–especially in the summer.
On the flip side, if your hair is pretty damaged, it will likely be a little frizzy in the beginning when you stop using silicones to tame it and start working to condition your hair.
This will likely be the case no matter when you start the Curly Girl Method, so you might as well go through it during a time when your hair is traditionally frizzy anyway.
This means you won’t have to deal with a second frizzy period if you start the Curly Girl Method at a different time, and once again, it’s easy to pull it up and hide it away.
It’s easy to hide product trial and error
Similarly, there will likely be a period at the beginning of the Curly Girl Method where you go through some product trial and error.
Some products won’t respond to your hair the way you’d hope, and it may very well leave you with a bad hair day.
But once again, summer was made for pulling your hair up or hiding it under a hat or bandana.
Sweat may be a plus
The Curly Girl Handbook will tell you that because sweat is basically moisture, it’s actually good for your curls.
And since a lot of the early days or the Curly Girl Method are all about rehydrating your hair, starting the Curly Girl Method in the summer means you can let nature help you out a bit.
I can’t say I paid too much attention to how sweat impacted my hair in the early stages. But since then, I’ve noticed that if my hair was a little frizzy before I work out, it often actually looks better after, and it stays looking good for the rest of the day!
You may have more time to play around
The Curly Girl Method is awesome, but it definitely comes with a bit of a learning curve. It often takes a little more time and patience in the beginning than it will once you get the hang of things a few months in.
Depending on your job and lifestyle, you may have more time in the summer to play around with your new curly hair routine and products.
This may be because of vacation time, summer break from school/work, or a more flexible summer work schedule.
Create Your Own Reality’s traffic often goes up in the summer, which is likely because a fair amount of people do have more time for this kind of thing.
So if you’re someone who falls into this category and has been thinking about the Curly Girl Method, you can absolutely use the extra time in the summer to your advantage.
It can help your hair after you swim
The Curly Girl Handbook is full of curly hair tips including what to do to protect your hair while you swim.
The regular conditioning preached by the Curly Girl Method will go a long way in making your hair healthier and recover faster. In addition, the Handbook also has tips, like how to spray your hair with olive oil, to protect it from the chlorine.
Of course, this is a tip you can use any summer, but since summer is just around the corner, it’s all the more reason to dive in and give your hair a chance to be the healthiest it can be.
